The Australian Studies Journal (ISSN 1864-3957) is an open-access academic publication issued by the editors on behalf of the German Association for Australian Studies with a regular issue in summer and special issues in spring and autumn.
The current issue can be found here. Previous issues have been published as hard copies only, but are now made available online in the archive on this website. Full texts (open-access) of the issues are successively added.

The Australian Studies Journal is also available as print version in the epubli online shop.

The Australian Studies Journal pursues the following objectives:

  • Making academically relevant topics from the area of Australian studies available to a broader public, and promoting the interdisciplinary academic dialogue on Australian studies;
  • Addressing and encouraging current discourses on Australia in secondary and tertiary education;
  • Discussing a variety of aspects relevant to Australia and its society: literature, linguistics, geography, natural sciences, history, politics, sociology, fine arts and culture, economics and international law. These issues are presented in consideration of both current and historical interrelations of European and Australian societies. In this context, studies on Indigenous Australian matters also receive special attention.

The Australian Studies Journal welcomes submissions that explore various aspects of Australian society, culture, history, politics, economics, environment, and more. Potential topics include, but are not limited to,

  • Indigenous studies and reconciliation
  • Australian languages
  • Australian literature and arts
  • Environmental sustainability and climate change
  • Multiculturalism and migration
  • Economic development and trade
  • Political systems and governance
  • Social issues and public policy
  • Historical perspectives and cultural heritage
  • Colonialism and racism
  • Science, technology, and innovation
  • Anthropology, natural sciences, education, law, philosophy etc.

The Australian Studies Journal is listed in the MLA International Bibliography and AustLit databases.
Submitted manuscripts for regular and special issues are subjected to a peer review process by independent reviewers.

The Australian Studies Journal is a diamond open access journal. All issues can be downloaded for free and no article processing charges (APCs) are collected from the authors. We define open access according to the definition of the Directory of Open Access Journals (https://doaj.org): The copyright holder (i.e. the author of an article or review) grants usage rights to others using an open (Creative Commons) license. This allows for immediate free access to the work and permits any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.
